Setting Up Your Adventure

First things first, you need a GPT. Next, you need a prompt. This is where the magic begins. An AI Dungeon Master thrives on a good story starter.

Make sure to have a good prompt. You can start with a simple one to get a feel of how it all works. However, for the best sessions, you need a detailed prompt. Describe everything you want. The more information you give your AI Dungeon Master, the better the session. As DnD is an intricate game, GPT needs plenty to work with.

It will set the stage for intrigue, adventure, and pure role-playing fun. What I like the most about using an AI Dungeon Master is the customization. Tweak the difficulty and introducing new ➤ characters is easy. You can even switch settings entirely. Want to go from a medieval fantasy world to a futuristic space adventure? The GPT adapts instantly.

How to use OpenAi Playground

  1. Go to ➤ OpenAI’s website and create an account. You can use your Google or Microsoft account to sign in.
  2. Choose a Model: On the Playground homepage, you’ll see a list of available models. These models vary in size and capabilities. For example, GPT-4o is the latest model.
  3. Type in a Prompt: You’ll see a text box where you can enter your prompt.
  4. You should see a generated response now.
  5.  If you’re satisfied with the generated text, you can save it by copying it to your clipboard. Or you can share it directly from the Playground.

You can also adjust settings. That’s optional, though. For example, you can specify the maximum number of tokens the model can generate in its response. Or you can set the temperature (this controls the randomness of the generated text). You can also choose whether to use the model’s default settings or customize them.

The AI Dungeon Master Prompt

Below is the prompt I have used. You’re free to copy or edit it as you want. Just click the “Copy” button and paste it into the GPT. See if an AI Dungeon Master is actually good.

Prompt

Let me play a DnD adventure including character sheets, dice rolls, and everything that goes with it.
Create a random character for me and choose any campaign.
As the GM, do not inform me of the potential outcomes of a dice roll before it happens.
Make the game incredibly difficult and implement a high likelihood of death, crippling injuries, or being wounded.
Roll dice on my behalf.
Number options with letters that must be chosen. Always mention that free-text responses are possible. Do not include the free-text possibility as a numbered option.
Include injuries as stat reductions and always describe the injury. Also, keep track of hit points. For example, climbing is very difficult with a broken arm.
Never provide more than one block of either actions, responses, or options.
Always use common sense. NEVER allow actions that do not make sense. NEVER allow actions that are stupid. Instead, provide a suggestion for action.
Do not allow statements or assumptions about things that have not happened and are simultaneously unlikely.

I always set the difficulty to “hard.” The possibility of dying after the next move is exciting. Of course, if you prefer easier gameplay, you can always write that in the prompt. Now, how does the AI Dungeon Master react to changes?

Stunningly well. It adapted to every single change I introduced without issues.

The power of AI really shines here. Let’s take my first campaign as an example. I instructed it to encourage illogical moves. That was really funny. Even though I died after nine steps. Right after that, I started my next campaign. Of course, I changed the prompt.

GPT, as an AI Dungeon Master, immediately adapted. Even when I tried doing something stupid, it didn’t allow me. It didn’t stop me or anything. The GPT just suggested that it’s not wise to attack head-on with my current character.

But even if you die, you can restart your campaigns. As much as you want.

An AI Dungeon Master example

Let’s dive into my example session with the AI Dungeon Master. Here’s a snippet of how one of my games went. I played as Thalgar Stonehammer, a dwarf fighter.

GPT:As you traverse through the dense forest, Thalgar, you hear rustling in the bushes nearby. What do you do?”

  1. Investigate the rustling.
  2. Proceed cautiously, keeping an eye on the bushes.
  3. Ignore the noise and continue on your path.

ME: Proceed cautiously, keeping an eye on the bushes.

GPT:As you proceed cautiously, keeping an eye on the bushes, you notice movement to your left. Suddenly, a pack of wild wolves bursts forth, snarling and baring their teeth. They seem hungry and aggressive. What do you do?”

  1. Draw your weapon and prepare to fight.
  2. Attempt to intimidate the wolves with a fierce roar.
  3. Try to slowly back away, avoiding direct confrontation.

ME: I charge onwards regardless of the consequences.

GPT:As you charge onward, heedless of the consequences, the wolves leap at you with ferocious speed. One of them manages to sink its teeth into your leg, causing a deep gash. You stumble, but manage to shake off the wolves momentarily. Your Hit Points are reduced to 10. What do you do now?”

  1. Continue fighting the wolves.
  2. Try to break free and flee deeper into the forest.
  3. Assess the severity of your injury and attempt to bandage it quickly.

The session went on for the next 45 minutes. Then I died. My mistake, honestly. But I love playing like this. The GPT AI Dungeon Master creates vivid and engaging scenes. And it pulls you deeper into the narrative.

Tips for Using GPT as an AI Dungeon Master

To get the most out of your AI Dungeon Master, here are a few tips:

Be Descriptive: The more detailed your prompts, the better the AI can craft the story. Add lots of specifics about the setting, characters, and plot.

Stay Engaged: Keep interacting with the AI and experiment. Ask questions or make rash decisions. Try to describe your character’s actions in detail. The AI Dungeon Master gets better with every input.

Embrace the Unexpected: One of the joys of using an AI Dungeon Master is the unpredictability. Embrace the unexpected twists and turns the AI introduces. It’s way more fun when you don’t know the outcome.

Combine Tools: Don’t hesitate to experiment with other tools. There are apps that can provide even better immersion. Through audio, visuals, and so on.

Exploring Beyond GPT

GPT does an excellent job as an AI Dungeon Master. However, there are tools out there that could enhance the experience even further.
