Telling stories is an art. You need a great imagination for it. Also, a good grasp of language. It’s not just about how you tell the stories. A lot depends on the experience too.
Technology is a big part of our lives. It’s no surprise it has changed storytelling too.
Interactive storytelling isn’t new. It’s been around for centuries. In different forms, though. But AI has never powered it. Not until now. That’s a huge difference. This new way changes everything. There are lots of great tools out there. Large language models, text to image, text to speech, and more. And they’re making a giant impact. For a good reason.
So, how do you start making interactive storytelling experiences? GPT is usually a good start. Later in the article, we’ll talk about more methods. We’ll see how you can make these experiences even better.
Now you know where to make an interactive storytelling session. But how do you do it? It’s not hard. It’s like planting a tree seed. But you can watch it grow right away.
First, you need an idea for your prompt. This will be the base of your story. Here’s a prompt I’m using for one of my stories. You can use and edit it as you like.
You are an interactive story generating engine. I want you to create a story where I will decide on the outcome based on the next steps I choose to take:
Story Title: The Lost City
Story Setting: Atlantis
Story Objective: Uncover the secrets of Atlantis and learn how the city came to be submerged. Find a way to communicate this discovery to the outside world. I order to do this, one must also solve the mystery of the stone tablet, which is believed to hold the key to either the salvation or destruction of Atlantis. To get to the tablet, one must first solve complex riddles and puzzles. Only then can they uncover the tablet.
These are the rules you must follow:
- Introduce the story
- Assign a random character.
- The story is unfolded on a step-by-step basis.
- Provide 5 possible next steps. Always mention that free-text is possible. Don't include free-text as a numbered option.
- Mention the tablet only at the beginning. Drive the entire story towards the discovery of the tablet. However, the tablet can only be discovered after a series of complex puzzles and riddles.
Your prompt doesn’t have to be long. It can be as simple as a setting. Or a character and a plot. For example, “There is a toy in the attic.” The GPT will give an initial context. Then, you just keep building your story. ➤ RPG Prompting It’s an awesome tool for as well!
As you see in my prompt, I wanted a specific story. And specific rules. But these are totally changeable. And that’s the best part of interactive storytelling. You can change and adjust everything to your liking.
I love ocean mysteries. That’s why I chose Atlantis for my setting.
That’s what we all love about AI. It lets you make amazing stuff with just words.
But I wanted to randomize choosing characters. So, the GPT picked a character for me. I didn’t feel like ➤ prompting characters.
The AI often picks a scientist or an archeologist. In similar situations, at least. But if you want to change things, go ahead. Whatever details you want, put them in the prompt. And only your imagination can limit you.
AI interactive storytelling is unique. It mixes human creativity with modern tech. This way, each session can be a new adventure. The stories change with each choice you make. It’s very dynamic.
Now, how is this different from traditional interactive storytelling? Until now, it was limited. Many tried to push these limits, though. Take video games, for example. Your choices change the plot, sure.
But it’s more like choosing paths in a predefined story. With AI, it’s about making it up as you go. And what you create fits your choices perfectly.
This makes the experiences very reusable. I’ve tried my Atlantis story at least 20 times. Sure, you’ll find yourself in similar situations. That has to happen sometimes. The theme of the story is the same.
The AI has been very creative. All my different sessions started with the same prompt. Still, they felt different.
This is an amazing ability. You can often come back to the same story. Yet, the story will always be different.
AI interactive storytelling is very flexible. It’s perfect for education, fun, simulations, ➤ DnD sessions and more. Parents with kids who love bedtime stories, too. They will love this. It makes telling stories so much easier. In some cases, even therapy could use it.
AI storytelling can make history or science fun too. Students can “live” through the events. For writers and artists, it’s a tool that breaks through blocks. It will craft ideas and scenes in an instant.
You just set the stage. Then, you interact with the story by making choices. You can ask questions or add new parts to the story. The AI responds on the spot. And that’s something we’ve never had so far. It weaves your ideas into the story. This process makes the story completely yours. It turns storytelling into an exciting adventure.
