An AI text adventure is essentially a story. But not just any story. You don’t just read them. You dive into them and make choices. And it all affects the plot in real time. It’s a unique blend of ➤ storytelling and gaming. So, it’s like playing a ➤ game. But AI guides it.
Here, you hold the reins. You know those classic books where you choose your own adventure? Each decision leads to a different path there. Now, take that concept and boost it with AI. It makes the experience super dynamic and immersive. That’s what an AI text adventure offers.
You craft everything with just a prompt. But more about that in a minute. The AI weaves a tale instantly. It’s like having an assistant who’s always inspired.
Every choice you make steers the narrative. It’s a unique experience every time you play. And you get to explore just about anything. Ancient ruins, futuristic cities, post-apocalyptic worlds, and so on. The adventure is always yours to choose.
Let’s see where and how you can prompt an AI text adventure.
Let’s take a look at prompting an AI text adventure. You’ll see, it’s not hard. Here’s one of my prompts. It’s one of my favorites. You’re free to copy and edit it as you wish.
I want to create a text adventure set in a mysterious, abandoned mansion, and I want the adventure to be really difficult.
The player begins outside the gates of the mansion at night, aiming to uncover the secret of the mansion's last owner, a reclusive inventor who mysteriously vanished decades ago.
This game should challenge players with complex puzzles that involve deciphering intricate riddles, manipulating sophisticated mechanical devices, and finding well-hidden keys.
The main areas for exploration include the foyer, the library, and an elaborate underground laboratory. The player must explore these three throughout the adventure.
The adventure should feature at least three major characters: a ghostly butler who provides cryptic clues, a talking portrait with a penchant for misleading the player, and the elusive spirit of the inventor who only appears under specific conditions. The player must meet these three throughout the adventure.
I want the adventure to have multiple endings that depend significantly on the choices the player makes, with several false leads and dead ends to increase the challenge. Additionally, for every step of the game, I want GPT to generate an image depicting what's happening in that particular step to enhance the visual experience of the game.
You need to follow this order for each step:
1. Generate an image depicting the current scene and action.
2. Describe the scene in detail.
3. Provide 5 possible choices for the next step. Include free text as a possible choice, but don't explicitly list it as a numbered option.
There are some things you need to consider. First, think about the setting for your adventure. Where is everything happening? Is it a fantastical realm full of dragons and magic? Or perhaps a cyberpunk city where technology is king? I used a creepy old castle. Those places are always full of mystery.
After that, work on your ➤ characters. Who appears in your AI text adventure? Are they friendly or not? I wanted my characters to be scary. And they’re unfriendly. I did that for two reasons. First, it fits the setting. Imagine a haunted castle full of friendly ghosts. It’s just goofy. And second, I love a good challenge.
You can edit my prompt if you want. Just change the details to fit your wishes. Or you can create a new one. After that, test your prompt in GPT. See if you like the results. You can always edit the prompt on the go. And that’s one of the best things about an AI text adventure. They are super adaptable.
You don’t have to make a detailed prompt right away. It can be simple, too. Just to get a feeling of how it works. “You are a futuristic knight in a dark cyberpunk city,” for example. The AI will instantly start crafting a world around this prompt.
After that, just start adding details. For example, “You are a futuristic knight in a dark cyberpunk city. You are searching for a lost chemical element. The surroundings are dark, and you hear a mysterious rustling in an alley.” Now, just continue with the details.
Test your prompt along the way, too. It will slowly turn into an AI text adventure.
Simple prompts can be good. However, the best ones have many details.
The more details you give, the better your adventure will be. GPT uses your prompt to generate the beginning of the story. From there, you make your own decisions. These shape the narrative. For example, you can choose to “check out the alley.” Or “draw your gun and fire.” You can just ignore the rustling as well.
The AI responds to your choices. It continues the AI text adventure based on them. It’s engaging and interactive. It’s like having a personal game master.
Creating characters for an AI text adventure is super fun. It’s easy, too. And the process is the same. You can make both main characters and ➤ NPCs.
First, think about who they are. Also, their personality traits, backstory, and motivations. Are they brave and noble? Cunning and resourceful? Maybe they have a mysterious past. Maybe they aren’t exactly good. I didn’t craft the main character in my prompt. That’s because I wanted to play as myself.
But you don’t have to. You can just add a character description to the prompt. For example, “The main player is called Jack. He is a clever thief with a dark past and a knack for getting out of trouble.” GPT will adapt instantly.
You’ve set the scene and defined the characters. But ➤ plots are also important. Why are your characters doing all this? Why are they in a haunted house? Or sailing the high seas on a pirate ship? What’s the goal of your adventure?
Maybe you’re searching for hidden treasure. Or trying to escape a monster. Maybe you want to solve a mystery. Then, add that to the prompt. For example, “Jack is on a pirate ship. His aim is to find hidden treasure and steal it for himself.”
Adaptability is one of the main strengths of AI.
