Is an AI RPG good?

AI RPG is a new phenomenon. There are a lot of discussions about them online. And opinions are divided.

We can talk all day about their legitimacy. Some say that AI is great for RPGs. On the other hand, some say it’s not. But that’s not the aim of this article. Our goal is to show you how to craft your own adventure. Why would you need an AI RPG anyway? Well, I can think of a couple of reasons. Let’s say you can’t find a group to play with. Or your group doesn’t have a Game Master. Maybe the GM you have isn’t imaginative enough. Perhaps you just want a challenge.

ai rpg 1

On the other hand, you may be the GM, and you want to practice. My reason is that I’ve always wanted to create my own RPGs. Very versatile games. Games where you can change anything in seconds.

So, where do you craft an AI RPG like this? A GPT is a good start.

How to use OpenAi Playground

  1. First, you’ll need a good tool.
  2. Go to ➤ OpenAI’s website and create an account. You can use your Google or Microsoft account to sign in.
  3. Choose a Model: On the Playground homepage, you’ll see a list of available models. These models vary in size and capabilities. For example, GPT 4o is the latest model.
  4. Type in a Prompt. You’ll see a text box where you can enter your prompt.
  5. You will get a generated response now.
  6. If you’re satisfied with the generated text, you can save it (copy it to your clipboard) or share it directly from the Playground.

Prompting an AI RPG

Prompting an AI RPG is not hard. It does come with some challenges, though. Let’s start with a prompt I am currently using.

Feel free to copy and edit the prompt as you wish.

Prompt
Markup
I want to play an RPG game. You will be the Game Master, and you will lead the game and and add character sheets, dice rolls and everything that goes with it.
1. Introduce the campaign
2. Introduce the main character.
2. Roll dice and generate a corresponding character sheet.
3. Introduce Johnny’s backstory and explain how and why he is here. Tell his story - the abduction, experiments and breaking free. Use no less than 700 words.
4. Provide a starting location. Johnny recently escaped from the laboratory, and he’s now in hiding. His adventure and revenge begin here. His ultimate goal is to take revenge on the aliens, destroy their planet and go back to earth. Model the game towards the achievement of that goal.
5. Start the game.

These are the additional information you need to know about Johnny:
The main character is Johnny, a soldier with a troubled soul. He just came back from the war and was looking to adjust to life in peace. Due to his PTSD-induced insomnia, he was used to hiking during the summer nights. One night, on the hill above his hometown, he was abducted by an alien race. He doesn’t know their ultimate goal. He only knows that they took him to conduct research. He spent two months in the alien laboratory. One night, the particular experiment the aliens were conducting triggered a deeply repressed memory. The experience kept bringing back flashbacks from the time spent in captivity in the war on Earth. In a blind feat of rage and due to his strength, military background and skills, he managed to free himself and run away from the alien laboratory. He is driven by a severe will for revenge and he’s now looking for a way to destroy the planet he is on, and return to Earth. He is wanted and hunted by the Zorc. But instead of just running away, he wants to destroy them first.
THE ENEMY is the alien race named Zorc.

These are the additional information you need to know about the game:
The game has a lot of sci-fi elements. Introduce puzzles, combat, moral conflict and dilemmas.
The theme of the game is cosmic adventure/psychological thriller. The setting is a distant futuristic planet.
You will roll the dice on my behalf. Roll dice for every step and show dice results. Be as impartial and random as possible when rolling the dice. The result of the dice roll directly affects the action in the game.
Johnny initially has only one weapon (his knife which he managed to steal back from the Zorc) . Johnny has to collect weapons along the way.
Present the game to me as if I were the main character.
Provide vivid descriptions of locations, encounters, weapons, characters, vehicles, and anything else Johnny may come across during the game. Use no less than 200 and no more than 300 words to describe the aforementioned. Never mention the number of words you have been given for the descriptions.
Introduce dangerous situations with a potential fatal outcome. Do not exclude r-rated content.
Provide five possible next steps for each step of the game. Assume that I am Johnny. Present the next steps from the first-person POV. Allow free-text as a possibility but don’t specify that it exists.

Do not mention the rules of the game. If asked, you can mention the final goal of the game, which is the total destruction of the alien planet, and safe return to Earth.
You will be completely impartial and will not suggest the best course of action, even if I ask for it. Time travel is not allowed in the game. You can’t fast forward or rewind.
Drive the game towards the final goal. The game stops only if/when Johnny dies.

Introduce a lot of NPCs during the adventure. Make it possible for me to collaborate with, talk to, befriend, and take into action an NPC if I choose to.
Upon introducing a new character, provide the option for Johnny to ignore, talk to or attack the new character. If possible, Johnny will beat the character. If not, he will die.
Allow characters to double-cross me.
Keep track of the characters and any information, skill, weapon, or anything else I retrieve from them. Allow me to ask for specific information and always provide.
Keep track of injuries, and design the course of the game according to the condition of the characters. For example, if a character is severely injured, they can’t perform any task that involves physical activity.

Always try to give the GPT a detailed prompt.

ai rpg 2 The better you explain, the better your AI RPG will be. Of course, you can always try using a simple prompt. You’ll still get a good generation. Still, if you’re looking for an elaborate game, you need a detailed prompt.

My adventure starts with Johnny. He’s a soldier with a dark past. And he just wants to find peace. However, we all know that’s not the way good stories go. He gets abducted by aliens. It may be a bit cliche, but I just love a good sci-fi drama. Johnny now has a burning desire for revenge.

So, that was the basis of my AI RPG prompt. The rest comes down to the rules I want the GPT to follow.

How is an AI RPG different?

Traditional RPGs go as far as the GM’s creativity. I have tried being a Game Master, and it’s not easy. You need to come up with a lot of stuff. Tons of different scenarios, NPCs, plot twists, and so on. And if you’re not well-prepared, it will affect the entire session.

ai rpg 3

On the other hand, an AI RPG is different. You don’t depend on the same factors. The AI’s creativity really shines here. It draws from a giant database. So, it can come up with an endless stream of different adventures, ➤ characters, and ➤ plots.

Plus, it makes the storyline richer. The GPT came up with some wild locations I wouldn’t think of in a lifetime. I mean, imagine fighting an alien on top of a mushroom made of glass. It will think of weird and beautiful locations in a second.

Another thing I love is the moral dilemmas. My AI RPG often has those. There is one scenario I remember vividly. Johnny found a group of refugees. They were frightened and also hiding from the Zorc. So I had a choice. Help them or use them as bait. I had a lot to gain from both options. But I’m a good guy. So, I helped them. It turns out they double-crossed me in the end.

ai rpg 4

That’s just one example of GPT’s creativity in an AI RPG. But there are tons of others.

How closely does the GPT follow the storyline?

Let’s retake a look at the prompt. I intentionally included a lot of NPCs. Also, a lot of unpredictable situations. Plus, a complex line of rules. Finally, I instructed it to keep track of injuries. I wanted to test everything.

The GPT does very well. Playing an AI RPG this way is really fun. The AI generates a lot of characters and their entire backstories. And I love that it does that in an instant. Their motivations, skills, and talents. That’s actually how I managed to beat the game in the end. Johnny met a rogue scientist. He had inside knowledge of the Zorc’s weaknesses. The way the AI portrayed the scientist really made the alliance feel genuine. Along with his quirky looks and mannerisms.

ai rpg 5

However, to destroy the planet, I needed an ancient artifact. But I needed to solve a complex series of puzzles to get it. The GPT made the AI RPG really feel tough with that one.

I love that it instantly adapts and adds an intellectual challenge to the session.

The potential for character collaborations is incredible.

AI RPG - Where do we go from here?

The use of GPT gave my sessions a new dimension. But there is still room for improvement. Fabley will take your AI RPG and make it even more immersive.

ai rpg 6

The GPT provides text. It has stunning capabilities. But is there a way to make these adventures even better? Add images and narration to the mix. Now, what you’re getting is a completely different experience. You‘ll find the same imaginative capabilities of the GPT in Fabley, too.

Plus, you’ll get an AI-generated image for every step of the game. The images depict what’s currently happening in your AI RPG. And it narrates the story for you.

Seeing Johnny fight the Zorc makes all the difference.

The faces and expressions of the aliens are really genuine. And it’s fun watching how Fabley imagines them. Of course, we all have our vision of what the Zorc could look like. If you want them to match your criteria, just add that to the prompt.

The best thing about it is that you can use the same prompt with Fabley as well. But you’ll get much more from it!

Conclusion

The arrival of an AI RPG brings a lot to the table. It’s a huge leap for the genre. AI can create endless immersive experiences and replayable scenarios. And they are never repetitive.

The added narration and images just make the immersion a lot better! It’s always more fun when you see your enemies and allies. Especially when you’re watching the whole Zorc planet burn!
