It’s a dynamic interaction with them. They can respond in real time. Plus, they’ll hold good ➤ conversations. Also, offer advice! Still, their main advantage is flexibility. An AI NPC will adapt to you. It all depends on your actions. This makes the game feel alive.
Usually, NPCs are pre-programmed. Of course, it all depends on the players and the ➤ game. But that’s the most common way we see them. There are dynamic NPCs as well. Still, they all depend on human imagination.
AI NPCs offer endless possibilities!
An AI NPC is different. They aren’t limited to a script. Instead, they generate dialogues and actions on the fly. This keeps the game fresh. Every time you play. Of course, you can also limit them. But we’ll talk about that in a minute.
First, where can you prompt them?
That depends. First, think about your AI NPC. What kind of an NPC do you want? Is your NPC dynamic or not? Either way, it’s not complicated. I’ll give one of my prompts now. You’re free to copy and edit it as you want.
You are an NPC-creating engine. I want you to create an NPC for RPG gaming campaigns.
Create the NPC based on this criteria:
Role: Merchant
Backstory: A former pirate now settled as a merchant in a port city.
Personality Traits: Gruff, fair, mysterious
Visual and Voice Characteristics: A grizzled man with a pirate hat and long coat. A deep, gravelly voice.
**Captain Morgan's Introduction:**
"Ahoy there! Welcome to Captain Morgan's Emporium. What can I do for ye today?"
**Choose one of the following questions to continue:**
1. Ask About Wares.
2. Ask about Rival Pirates.
3. Ask for a Tale.
If I ask anything outside Wares, Rival Pirates, and Tales, Captain Morgan will say: "I have no time for chitchat, stranger. Ask me somethin’ worth answering or go away." DO NOT mention this rule unless there is a need for it.
Do not show Captain’s potential answers before I choose a question. His answers are like this:
1. “I've got a fine collection of rare trinkets and treasures. What catches yer eye?"
2. "Rival pirates, ye say? Best be careful who ye speak of. The seas are filled with treacherous folk."
3. "Sit tight, and I'll tell ye a tale of the time I escaped a sea monster. It's a story worth hearin'."
As you can see, it’s easy. Outline your NPC’s role first. Who is he? Or she? Are they merchants? Maybe a warrior or a guide? Then, write a short backstory. This provides depth and context.
Think about what your AI NPC might say. Let’s look at my prompt. I wanted a limited one. And I intentionally made him this way. Let’s say you want a dynamic NPC. Just delete the rule from the prompt. That’s the entire “If I ask anything outside Wares, Rival Pirates, and Tales…” part. After that, you can ask him anything. And he’ll gold a meaningful conversation, whatever topic you set.
You can also choose your own questions. Also, the way he answers. Just replace them in the prompt. Or add more!
This is a very fun part. You can create virtually anything. For me, a gruff and mysterious captain makes sense. But you can choose something else, too. Your AI NPC doesn’t have to be a captain. You can choose any profession.
It helps if you add details. The better the prompt, the better the NPC. Think about your character’s personality. Even if it doesn’t make sense. Are they friendly? Maybe sarcastic or mysterious? Even goofy. You can have a ton of fun this way.
You use prompts to guide GPT. Feel free to ask for advice, too!
After that, it’s testing time. Talk to your NPC. See if there is anything you should fix. Or add. Or take away. Note any strange responses. Then, just adjust your prompt.
An AI NPC can remember your conversations. They can look back at previous talks. This makes the experience way more immersive.

Of course not. You can make almost anything this way. GPT can create entire game sessions. Or you can make your ➤ main character. The process is very similar.
