Where do you create a text RPG?
Creating your own text RPG isn’t complicated. All you need is a prompt. Let me give you one of my prompts now. You can use and edit it as you want.
Let me play a text based RPG adventure including character sheets, dice rolls, and everything that goes with it.
Create a random character for me and choose any campaign.
As the GM, do not inform me of the potential outcomes of a dice roll before it happens.
Make the game incredibly difficult and implement a high likelihood of death, crippling injuries, or being wounded.
Roll dice on my behalf.
Number options with letters that must be chosen. Always mention that free-text responses are possible. Do not include the free-text possibility as a numbered option.
Include injuries as stat reductions and always describe the injury. Also, keep track of hit points. For example, climbing is very difficult with a broken arm.
Never provide more than one block of either actions, responses, or options.
Always use common sense. NEVER allow actions that do not make sense. NEVER allow actions that are stupid. Instead, provide a suggestion for action.
Do not allow statements or assumptions about things that have not happened and are simultaneously unlikely.
As you can see, creating a text RPG is easy. It’s all about the prompts. The better the prompt, the better the game. Start by thinking about the world you want to create. Is it a medieval ➤ fantasy land with knights and dragons? Or maybe a dystopian future where survival is key? Whatever you choose, be clear in your prompt.
Let’s say you want to create a fantasy world. You might prompt GPT like this: “Create a text RPG set in a medieval kingdom. The player is a rogue on a quest to find a lost artifact. The game includes exploration, combat, and puzzles.”
Next, think about the main ➤ character. Who are they? What do they want? A good start for a character prompt might look like this: “The player is a young wizard who has just discovered their powers. They must navigate a world full of magic and danger.”
Then, consider the choices you want. In a text ➤ RPG, choices are key. They’re what make the game interactive. Prompt GPT with options like, “Does the player go left or right?” or “Do they fight the dragon or try to sneak past it?”
So, you’ve got your basics. What now? Now, you can personalize the whole text RPG.
Think about the consequences of your choices. What happens if the player chooses one path over another?
This is where the story really comes to life. Taking the left path may lead to a treasure. But taking the right path leads to a trap. GPT can give your game depth and complexity this way.
Think also about the world your character is in. What does it look like? What kind of creatures live there? You can prompt GPT to add details like, “Describe the city of Alaria. It’s a bustling marketplace surrounded by high walls.” Or, “Create a list of creatures that live in the enchanted forest.”
The more details you add, the richer your world becomes. And with AI, it’s easy to keep adding layers to your game. You can also prompt for different environments. Maybe a snowy mountain range, a dark underground cave, or a bustling city street.
Characters are the heart of any story. And in a text RPG, they’re essential.
You can use GPT to flesh out all your ➤ characters. And I’m not only talking about the main ones. You can create endless ➤ NPCs this way. AI will give them backstories, personalities, and motives. For example, you could prompt, “Create a backstory for a grizzled warrior who lost his family in a war.” Or, “Describe a mysterious sorceress who has her own hidden agenda.”
Adding depth to your characters makes the game more engaging.
Players will want to know more about them. They’ll be invested in what happens next. You can also create dialogue options and ➤ conversations. This lets players interact with these characters in different ways. Maybe they can choose to befriend a character. Or betray them later in the game. It all depends on your imagination!
